World War II Veteran Sam Rosella Receives the Prestigious Chevalier Legion of Honor Medal

Sam Rosella, a resident of St. John's Meadows who served in the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II has received the Chevalier Legion of Honor medal from the French Government. This medal was created by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 in recognition of eminent service to the Republic of France. Veterans of the First and Second World Wars are eligible for this commendation. There are five ranks: Chevalier, Officier, Commandeur, Grand Officier, and Grand Croix. Each year, this award is presented to approximately 100 U.S. Veterans who helped to liberate France during World War II.

Sam proudly served in the Army Airborne Division from 1942-1945. He is active today in several veterans' clubs. He is a recipient of several other medals of honor to include: the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and French Forge' for his meritorious combat service during “The Battle of the Bulge.” Sam recalls “the extreme cold temperatures and gliding into battle having to quickly dig his foxhole with ammunition flying overhead.” He has many stories to share about his experiences during World War II and relates that, “it was through the efforts of soldiers who were able to force the German Army back into Germany during the infamous “Battle of the Bulge,” that was critical in leading to victory in 1945.”

The “Battle of the Bulge” was fought from 12/16/44 – 1/25/45 along the German-Belgium border. Large losses are recorded of 19,000 killed and 62,000 wounded, captured, or missing in action. This battle is considered one of the fiercest and most desperately fought in the history of World War II.
