Local physician G. Allen Power has been awarded a Bellagio Residency by the Rockefeller Foundation for the spring of 2012. The Residency provides a month of lodging in Lake Como, Italy for a diverse group of individuals working on projects of interest to the Foundation. Individuals are chosen from many areas, including arts and humanities, science and academia, and public policy.
Dr. Power, an internist and geriatrician, currently works at St. John’s Home as a specialist in transformational models of long-term care. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Rochester and an educator and board member for The Eden Alternative. He is the author of Dementia beyond Drugs: Changing the Culture of Care (c.2010 Health Professions Press), which won a 2010 Book of the Year Award from the American Journal of Nursing.
Dr. Power submitted a dual application with Dr. Emi Kiyota, an environmental gerontologist and founder of the new non-profit Ibasho. Ibasho was formed to help create socially integrated and sustainable communities that value people of all ages. During their upcoming residency, Drs. Kiyota and Power will develop guiding principles for the design and planning of communities that value and engage older people regardless of their physical and cognitive abilities.
Dr. Power, a Rochester native, lives with his wife Eileen Hayes-Power in Brighton.
